GOALS

“A goal isn’t always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at.”

~ Bruce Lee

Why are goals important?

As Bruce Lee said, not all goals are reached, but that isn’t always the most important thing. Of course achieving our goals and dreams is amazing, but who you become on the journey is much more valuable.

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” ~ Les Brown

Goals, by their own nature, should have a plan of attack to bring it to fruition. A main goal, and the steps to achieve the goal. A business uses goals to track their company progress and ensure they are on the path to success.

SMART Goals

What makes a goal Specific?

A goal that’s aim is comprehensive and formed by business owners who answer the questions to

Who, What, Why, and How…

  • Who can help me achieve this goal? (Employees, friends, family, etc.)
  • What do I want to achieve?
  • Why do I need to complete this goal?
  • How do we go about accomplishing the goal? (Who will be working where, doing what, processes to be followed, etc..)

What makes a goal Measurable?

The goals must have defining evidence that can be reevaluated regularly to prove you’re making the progress. Often declared without a quantifiable value, goals must have a way to be measured, if not, how would a business know if it is truly achieving its goals.

Example:

NO - Goal: I want to increase my followers on social media.

YES - Goal: I would like to gain 50 new followers on my social media accounts this month.

Milestones on the way to the GOAL

What is an Attainable goal?

Be realistic with your goals. Set reasonable expectations. Aiming for something way out of reach will do you no good!

Don’t discourage yourself, aim for something that you can hope to achieve without some sort of extraordinary circumstance.

Example:

NO - Goal: I want to double the calls from my website in the next 24 hours.

YES - Goal: To see an increase of 50% for calls from my website by next quarter.

So, with the time and resources at your disposal, is it realistic to achieve your goal, the way you have it laid out?

I mean, obviously there will always be that one company that hits the jackpot early, but as jackpot suggests, these can be put alongside lottery winners. To set achievable goals, build on successes, and learn from failures would be astute.

“It’s okay to fail, just do it quickly.”

Be sure to incorporate industry knowledge such as economic, seasonal, political, and financial influences. For example, a company marketing snow blades in the winter, the company’s goals should be lower in the summer.

How do you make a goal Relevant? ~ Align to your Values!

Linking to the company’s philosophy, vision and personality. Why are you trying to reach this goal? Is it important to you or your organization?

Identifying this is a foundational element to your goals. Ensure you add it into the goal so that your team knows the importance and how it applies to the bigger picture.

What is a Time-based goal?

When establishing goals they should all be measurable, therefore setting clear deadlines and milestones is imperative. Deadlines give people something to work towards, while milestones are checkpoints on the way to reevaluate and determine progress made.

Example:

NO - Goal: I want to increase sales revenue by 15%. (Not Time-based)

YES - Goal: I want to increase sales revenue by 15% in the next 3 months. (Time-based)
